How did the 1970's differ from today in terms of money and stuff?

Inflation has driven up prices of a lot of stuff, including salaries but our buying power has shrunk by half because the EPA and other environmental (please don't be mad I am a "greenie") concerns have doubled the prices of everything. (it costs twice as much to make stuff as it used to)
