Reverend parris's role in the crucible?

According to The Crucible, the Salem Witchcraft Trials started because Parris caught the girls dancing in the woods, and because the girls were scared, they pretended to be sick. Because the adults could not determine what was wrong with the girls, they turned to witchcraft to explain it. After that, Parris does not play a significant role in the play, but he adds to the tension and hysteria of the play because he is a selfish pastor who cares more for his reputation than anything else, and will do anything to save his own skin.
